Sandhill Cranes in the fall

The migrating Sandhill Cranes arrive daily in great numbers at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in the fall. Whooping cranes also make a showing. Led by the Operation Migration ultralights, last year's group of 17 chicks left Wisconsin on Oct. 13 arrvied at Hiwassee Island in December, due to many weather delays.

The diverse landscape of the gorge provides habitats for more than a thousand varieties of plants, ferns, trees, grasses and flowers as well as a rich wildlife population. Nearly 200 different species of birds inhabit "Tennessee's Grand Canyon."
